Trip Overview

Flatwater paddlers in the Cincinnati area now have new waters to enjoy. Winton Lake, a 180-acre impoundment just north of the city limits has been opened for use by non-motorized canoe and kayaks. The 50 year old reservoir, operated by the Hamilton County Park District, had been restricted, since its creation, to the park systems rental fleet of rowboats and paddleboats.

Responding to requests from the public, the Park District constructed a launching dock and began allowing private paddlers on the lake. The reaction has been extraordinary. Within a month, without publicity beyond word of mouth, up to 12 private boats are launching each day. In fact, the paddle craft on the lake have generated enough interest from the public that the Park District is adding both canoes and Kayaks to its rental fleet.

As you paddle away from the dock, the waters meander through forests and fields of the surrounding 2,700-acre park. The lake itself is nearly 3 miles in length, not including several additional bays along the way to explore. Wildlife is abundant, with herons, geese, raccoons and deer seen regularly. Within twenty minutes of downtown, newly accessible Winton Lake is perfectly suited for quick workout or quiet getaway. For more information, call the Winton Lake Boathouse at (513) 931-1849.
