Trip Overview

Deal lake is a shallow body of water that is very close to the Atlantic Ocean and runs thru Asbury park and several small towns: Interlaken, Deal, Loch Arbor, Allenhurst and Wanamassa. Surrounded with Private Homes and trees around much of its shoreline. The water is usually brown/murky but it is filled with coves and is protected from winds on most of the lake. Some Lilly pads, brush and tree laydowns and freshwater fish like Largemouth bass, Calico Bass (Crappie) and is stocked by the state with Northern Pike. Herring migrate into this lake up and over the flume in the spring to spawn and then return to the sea.

There are several low bridges to go under that add some interesting texture to the trip. With a recreational type of kayak, you could easily spend 5 hours round trip. There arent any rocks for fiberglass boaters to worry about except for a few bricks at the put in site.

At one end of the lake, there is a very classy golf course and at the other end you can see The city of Asbury park which is quickly becoming the mecca that it used to be back in the day.

High rise apartments in Asbury, an ocean breeze and the flume (no danger here) which connects the lake to the ocean adds a very different feel from your usual lake type kayak adventure.

On most trips to Deal Lake, I see loads of waterfowl: cormorants, canadian geese, ducks, Egrets, Herons and Brant. There are turtles, and lots of huge carp that throw a wake at your yak as they scoot away from you.

Accommodations:

There is a small, safe, park located across from the Allenhurst Train Station that I prefer to park and launch from. Look for a green and white gazebo.

You will have to carry your kayak about a 75 feet to put in. So if you have wheels or a buddy, it helps. The put in itself is not terrific, but I prefer it here to the actual lake launch ramp in the Town of Asbury.

Directions:

Route 18 South to Exit 10 at Route 66. Route 66 East to left on main street in asbury park. Over Bridge left on Corlies park/train station is on right.
