Hubbard Pond in New Hampshire

Trip Overview

Simply beautiful! From where I put in, the pond looked ok but nothing terrific. I couldn't have been more wrong! The Hubbard Pond was much larger than I imagined. There are numerous coves and outlets to explore as well as several marsh areas (most too shallow to paddle).

I rarely kayak ponds as I prefer rivers but this was a true gem - easy, quiet, a wonderful feel of solitude (especially in the north section) with large islands. There is what looks like a camp for kids on one side with 50 small kayaks and canoes so that could be a serious problem on certain days if quiet is what you want.

I saw a few blue herons, one turtle and tons of fish making those sand nests, which I love to see, plus lovely views of Mt. Monadnock from certain regions. A trip to this pond would be well worth your time.

Directions:

From 91 south, exit towards Northfield, route 10. Follow that until you hit 119. Follow that east. After 119 crosses route 202, go 1.6 miles and turn left onto Cathedral Road. Follow signs for Cathedral of the Pines and pass it by. At .7 miles from entrance (or 2.3 miles from 119), you will see the access road as you take a sharp curve. It will be on the right. Go .4 miles to pond. The access road is rough but I did it in a Honda Accord. Watch for mosquitoes at the put-in! They come with their own utensils.
